FARM funding to create a reservoir to irrigate crops and improve profitability
A Suffolk Farm has built a reservoir which has improved the finances, crop quality and environment of a Suffolk farm thanks to funding secured by ARC Chair and grant specialist, Emma Powlett.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
A business in Suffolk that farms a rotational mix of cereals, sugar beet, oilseed rape, potatoes and onions was seeking a solution to irrigate water to their root crops and onions, to improve the overall business performance and improve productivity.
The greatest fear to land managers in the East of England is the “fear of the flood and fear of the drought”.
The key to the delivery of more integrated management of water will be the construction of better, more innovative water infrastructure (built interventions as well as the way we manage land) that recognises and adequately values its benefit to the environment, communities and the economy.
THE SOLUTION:
The solution was to construct a 80,000 m3 clay lined reservoir to improve irrigation. Emma, who has managed successful European Rural Development Programmes was appointed by her client, to help secure a grant.
The aim of the project was to build a reservoir to improve the quality and marketability of the crops, increase cropping options and improve and protect the farm’s future financial security as it faces the challenges that lie ahead for the industry.
THE OUTCOME:
- The funding was secured to build the reservoir and improve irrigation.
- Farm productivity has increased.
- Profitability has increased.
- Additional work has been created for local employees.
- The reservoir and irrigation system has brought significant environmental benefits.
